About Us

Who we are

Westoe Road Baptist Church began in 1818 in the centre of South Shields. We moved to our current building, right next to the town hall, in 1881.

We believe that church is a family, sharing life and our faith together. Whatever your age or background, everyone is welcome.

Sunday is our main focus where we can come together to worship God and catch up with each other.

Our leadership team is responsible for the spiritual life and day to day running of the church.

Please have a look at our Church Life to see more about who we are and what we do.

What we believe

Most importantly we believe that God is at the centre of everything we do. Our mission statement is
'to share the love and hope of Jesus with our church family, the community and the wider world.'

We do this by ...
• Worshipping God - on a Sunday and throughout the week
• Journeying together - supporting each other in our faith and in our everyday lives
• Reaching out - through our work in the community and supporting wider church mission

We are a member of the Baptist Union.

The Basis of the Baptist Union is:

1. That our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, is the sole and absolute authority in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as revealed in the Holy Scriptures, and that each Church has liberty, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to interpret and administer His laws.

2. That Christian Baptism is the immersion in water into the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, of those who have professed repentance towards God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ who 'died for our sins according to the Scriptures; was buried, and rose again the third day'.

3. That it is the duty of every disciple to bear personal witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to take part in the evangelisation of the world.

We would love to share more about us and what we believe with you on a Sunday morning.
